Week Eight

10/9/17-10/14/17

With reading days on both Monday and Tuesday, week eight was short and sweet but with lots of coursework and events packed into the last two days. I worked one event this week and it was the Mini Career Fair hosted in Muntz Hall. This event impacted me because I realized how many job and internship opportunities for college students. It was awesome to see students take interests in these opportunities and explore their options. I also completed the third session of SLPDI on Thursday. This session was dedicated to the resume. I felt like I was able to make an impact at this session because I had the opportunity to review students’ resumes and give them tips on how to improve their resume. I re-made my running resume during one of the reading days so that I was able to give the students an example of how they could make their resume look. I told the students I was helping that they could make an appointment with Career Services once they updated their resumes to have me or Sarah look them over again. I was also able to work alongside one of my professors, Monica Widdig, at this session as she helped look over resumes as well. It was great to network and connect with Professor Widdig outside of class! On Friday, I had the opportunity to meet with Alex to discuss our event "Go for the Gold". We set a date for December 1st and we talked about trying to get some in-kind donations for the event. I was also able to catch up with LiAnn and complete our Ambassador of the Week!

Other than events, I had lots of classwork to complete this week! I had to write a paper about James Baldwin’s essay work and watch a documentary based on his life. I chose to write about how his ideas are still relevant today—more specifically, how his peaceful approach to racism is still important in today’s society. With the “Take a Knee” protests and Black Lives Matter movement happening right now, I felt they were perfect examples of how Baldwin’s philosophy is still very important.
