Week Thirteen
11/13/17-11/17/17

Week Thirteen was busy as usual but was full of very unique experiences. I was able to give a tour on Monday to a group of Mason High School students. This was very special to me because my younger sister is graduating this year and I was able to answer some of the same questions/concerns these seniors have and also be able to relate to them since I’m from the same part of town! I also helped Prerna with her event Taste of the World. This was one of my absolute favorite events of the semester. There was food from all countries and cultures and Prerna was able to have both faculty, staff, and students participate. This event impacted me because I was able to see how connected and connected everyone was to their culture. It was such a unique experience to be a part of! On Friday, some of the other ambassadors (Alex, Charlotte, LiAnn, and Prerna) and I traveled to Akron with Nick Castro to participate in the Propel Ohio conference. We were able to meet senator Sherrod Brown and discuss issues such as childhood poverty and hunger and the opioid epidemic occurring in our state. I felt I was able to make an impact here because I was able to discuss important issues and possible solutions with my peers. On Thursday, I was able to participate in the final session of SLPDI and it was the mock interview! I met with Sarah beforehand to discuss my responsibilities. I was able to give the participants some interview tips as well as answer questions about both the SOL and ambassador interview processes. I was sad to see SLPDI to end but I am excited to attend the etiquette dinner on Monday and celebrate with everyone for completing the sessions!
In my classes this week, we are continuing to discuss final projects. I am planning on writing my final paper in English over the graphic novels Maus I and Maus II. I plan on writing about the father-son relationship between the author (Art Speigelman) and his father (Vladek). The point of this final paper is to relate Maus I and Maus II to another work we read about this semester. I plan on paralleling Speigelman’s relationship to his father to James Baldwin’s relationship to his father in the essay “Notes of a Native Son”. I have really enjoyed reading all of the works this semester and have appreciated the paper topics we have been assigned! I will definitely be ready for a writing break by the end of the semester!
